Hi, I am Jóvan Stephens

Let's get to know each other

Hi, hello, howzit — I’m Jóvan.

A young, ambitious creative from South Africa with a lifelong love for the arts. My fascination with creativity started early, whether it was getting lost in movies, immersing myself in music, or sketching characters in my notebooks. I actually began my university journey studying to become an illustrator — and while I completed that path, I also double-majored in photography. It didn’t take long for me to realise that photography was where my heart felt most at home.

A few fun parts of my story: I grew up as a national gymnast and dancer, which taught me discipline, expression, and the beauty of movement — something that still influences the way I see and capture people today. I’ve always loved creating, no matter the medium. I’m also a big fan of fashion and an avid F1 fan, and I absolutely love travelling, exploring, and discovering new places.

You might be wondering where the name “Gold Slit” comes from. Among my friends — and you’ll see for yourself if we meet — I have a small piece of gold in one of my teeth. The cosmetic filling used is called a “gold slit,” and that’s where the name comes from. It’s a small detail, but it reflects my love for unique touches, personal style, and celebrating individuality — the same values I bring to my photography.

At my core, I’m a people person. I genuinely enjoy connecting, socialising, and sharing light-hearted, joyful, and humorous moments with others. That’s one of the reasons I love what I do — photography gives me the gift of meeting people from all walks of life and telling their stories through my lens.

For me, photography is more than just taking pictures. It’s about slowing down, romanticising life, and preserving the beauty and rawness of each moment. I believe in capturing images that feel honest — the in-betweens, the laughter, the emotion, the fleeting details that often go unnoticed. These are the moments that become memories, and eventually, the memories that future generations will look back on and cherish.

My goal is simple:

to create a space where you feel comfortable, seen, and celebrated — and to deliver imagery that feels true to who you are.

If you’re looking for a photographer who values connection, creativity, and authenticity, I’d love to create something meaningful with you.
